A lifelong rebel and challenger of all social conventions – especially those surrounding love and marriage – this vital, brainy woman then goes and falls in love for the (first?) time at forty. Beauvoir’s magnum opus, The Second Sex (1949), helped ignite the feminist movement and changed women’s lives forever. Her theory that “woman is not born but made” led to a moral and intellectual revolution. Its publication caused a howl of rage and derision across Europe: “You have made the French male look ridiculous!” thundered Albert Camus.
